| Ahy Lawdy, 68" x 65", 2007 After having seen the wonderful work by the Gees Bend quilters at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, MA, and looking at interviews with them via DVD and in books, I was proud to be a fellow artist from Alabama. One quilter said that she found a tiny piece of cloth in a ditch. She picked it up, took it home, washed it, and incorporated it into her quilt. In admiration, I went to the studio, looked for small scraps of fabric and let whatever design happen, happen. As I worked I asked my father if he would write Ahy Lawdy on paper and mail it to me. He is ninety-one years old and when he moves, he utters, " Ahy Lawdy." After many requests, he did and I stitched his handwriting on the back of the quilt as its title. As for the doodles on the quilt, I stitched whatever came to mind as I went. It was great fun, and a tribute to many people who have brought real joy into my life. |
